Rules

LCOS Premodern is the monthly Magic: The Gathering league based on Premodern, an unofficial format created by players in 2012. Run by the LCOS, the league is played one Sunday a month in Barcelona.

Deck construction

We use the rules set out by the creators of Premodern, with the sets and the B&R list they propose. You will find everything about it here: Premodern Magic

Reprint and proxy policy

  • All reprints are allowed, including the World Championship Decks / gold-bordered ones.
  • Proxies are allowed as long as they are recognisable.
  • Badly cut black-and-white photocopies are not.

To keep the Premodern spirit alive, we recommend playing cards with the original art and the old border.

Entry fee

The entry fee is 8 euros, and every cent of it goes back into the prizes: league patches for the top 8, a playmat for the winner, and card raffles for everyone taking part.

Format

  1. Five rounds of Swiss (subject to attendance) and a top 8 knockout (the best-placed player in the Swiss is on the play).
  2. Rounds last 50 minutes. If there is no winner after those 50 minutes, five extra turns are played.
  3. Once those turns are over, the game ends. Intentional draws are not allowed.

Spirit

Those of us who started the LCOS Premodern league are regular Old School players — the best Magic format there is, alongside Premodern. Old School has one rule that sits above all the others: don’t be a jerk. We intend to make that rule ours too. We want this league to mean cheese and bacon, beer and good company around a handful of wizards and their spellbooks. If we spot a jerk we will politely invite them to leave the event, we will say so publicly, and they will not be taking part in future ones. But we are quite sure that will never happen.
